The structure is an interior from Notre Dame in Rouen, France. The musical term of sonata was the inspiration for this painting. A sonata is usually divided into three parts. In the first part two opposing themes are introduced. In the second part the composer develops the two themes alternately. And finally utilizing the development of both themes the composer reconciles the two themes in the final movement. In the painting, "Sonata", the sequence begins in the bottom section with the figure presented floating against the architectural structure. In the top left second movement the figure is developed with the architecture superimposed. And in the final movement top right the figure and architecture are developed and resolved
